Well, according to the Australian Heart Foundation, adults should not be consuming more than 6g of salt per day in order to reduce your risk of high blood pressure. 6g of salt is about 1 teaspoon a day. Most food labels show the sodium content in mg, so it makes it difficult to determine if we’re consuming too much salt.
1 gram of salt equals 400 mg sodium. That makes the recommended daily intake of sodium about 2400 mg. In addition, if you have high blood pressure, you should reduce your salt intake to 1600 mg sodium (4 grams). Read the labels in food to determine your salt intake. Avoid too much takeaway food.
As a good rule of thumb, keep to around 150 – 200 mg sodium per meal.
